Ubisoft Barcelona Workers Stage Strike After Mass Layoffs

Ubisoft Barcelona employees will strike every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from June 30 through July 16 in response to layoffs that eliminated 51 positions—roughly 28% of the studio's workforce. The walkout follows the company's broader restructuring efforts that have already cut hundreds of jobs across multiple studios this year.

Workers are demanding the reinstatement of laid-off staff, five-year job security protections, and adherence to internal promotion procedures that were allegedly ignored. They also seek a remote work agreement allowing 60% monthly work-from-home time plus salary and benefits improvements.

This isn't the first labor action against Ubisoft's restructuring. The French Video Game Workers' Union previously organized a two-week strike with similar demands. The Barcelona strike highlights growing tensions in the gaming industry as major publishers restructure amid post-pandemic market pressures.

The action signals that cost-cutting measures at major game studios now face organized resistance from workers who feel the changes were poorly communicated and unfairly executed. Whether Ubisoft will negotiate remains unclear.
