Samsung's UFS 5.0 Storage Hits 10.8 GB/s Speed for On-Device AI

Samsung Electronics unveiled the industry's first UFS 5.0 storage solution, delivering sequential read speeds of up to 10.8 GB/s and write speeds reaching 9.5 GB/s. These rates more than double the performance of the previous UFS 4.1 standard, marking a significant leap in mobile storage technology. The breakthrough addresses growing demands for local AI processing as generative AI shifts from cloud to device.

According to Jangseok Choi, head of Memory Product Planning at Samsung, storage devices are becoming key drivers for AI experiences on mobile platforms. The UFS 5.0 integrates JEDEC's latest embedded memory interface standard, enabling much faster handling of large datasets required for on-device large language models. Power efficiency improves by over 40% compared to UFS 4.1 through innovations like clock gating and multi-voltage technologies.

Samsung squeezed the new solution into an ultra-compact package measuring 7.5 mm x 13 mm x 0.9 mm, which is 16.7% smaller than its predecessor. This size reduction enhances design flexibility for smartphones, wearables, and extended reality devices. Mass production begins in the fourth quarter with capacities reaching up to one terabyte, positioning Samsung to supply flagship phones through XR headsets as on-device AI adoption accelerates.

The storage advancement directly supports the industry's push toward local AI processing, reducing latency and extending battery life for resource-intensive applications. Samsung's timing aligns with smartphone makers increasingly integrating large language models directly into devices rather than relying solely on cloud-based services.
