NVK Open-Source Driver Adds Experimental DLSS Support for Linux Gaming

The open-source NVK Vulkan driver for NVIDIA GPUs on Linux has gained experimental DLSS support, marking a significant step toward feature parity with NVIDIA's proprietary driver stack. This community-driven development represents months of work to bring advanced graphics technologies to the open-source ecosystem.

Mesa 26.2 will include the DLSS implementation through the VK_NVX_binary_import extension, with the stable release scheduled for August 2026. Users must enable the feature by setting the NVK_EXPERIMENTAL=dlss environment variable, as developers continue refining the implementation.

Recent benchmarks show performance gaps still exist between open-source and proprietary drivers, though community contributions have narrowed the divide. The DLSS support should help address some performance regressions in current NVK versions.

This development matters because it gives Linux gamers access to NVIDIA's upscaling technology without relying on proprietary drivers, potentially improving gaming experiences on open-source systems.
