Linux Tablet Driver Collaboration Blocked by Wacom Branding Issues

A Linux hardware reviewer's attempt to establish direct collaboration with drawing tablet manufacturers for open-source driver development hit an unexpected roadblock. After working with Red Hat developers on the udev-hid-bpf project to create FOSS drivers for tablets from Gaomon, Xp Pen, and Huion, the reviewer sought to streamline the process by connecting brands directly with kernel maintainers.

The effort showed promise when Gaomon connected the reviewer with a technical contact at Shenzhen Huion Trend Technology, representing multiple brands. However, the marketing department ultimately rejected the proposal, citing concerns about sharing specifications with Wacom through infrastructure repositories branded with the competitor's name. The libwacom and wacom-hid-descriptors projects contain support for numerous manufacturers but retain Wacom-centric naming.

This branding conflict reveals a fundamental barrier to collaborative driver development in the Linux ecosystem. When competing companies must route their hardware specifications through repositories named after their largest rival, it creates an inherent trust problem that stifles cooperation. The reviewer notes this isn't just about technical implementation but about building sustainable collaborative relationships.

With three tablets currently in transit for individual review, the author will continue the one-by-one approach, documenting specifications for Peter Hutterer and Benjamin Tissoire to convert into working drivers. This highlights how legacy naming decisions in open-source infrastructure can have real business implications for hardware compatibility.
