Montage Technology has initiated trial production of its CXL 3.2 Memory eXpander Controller (MXC) chip, a significant development for AI and data center memory expansion. This chip supports CXL Type 3 specifications, CXL.mem, CXL.io, and PCIe 6.x, enabling data transfer rates up to 64 GT/s.

The MXC chip features dual DDR5 memory controllers capable of 8000 MT/s DDR5 memory. It efficiently converts host CXL memory requests into DDR commands, overcoming traditional server memory limitations. The design includes PCIe 6.x PHY, DDR5 PHY, dual RISC-V subsystems, and management interfaces, supporting various form factors like PCIe AIC and EDSFF modules for memory expansion, pooling, and tiered architectures.

Stephen Tai, President at Montage Technology, highlighted the chip as a milestone in CXL innovation, offering high-bandwidth, large-capacity solutions for AI infrastructure. The company also provides an SDK and tools to aid customer development. Leading manufacturers like Samsung and SK hynix have integrated the MXC into their next-generation products, with initial validation completed. The solution is designed for compatibility with Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC platforms.
