Microsoft Gave FBI BitLocker Keys from Guam Laptops

Microsoft has confirmed it provided BitLocker encryption keys to the FBI, unlocking three laptops from Guam. The agency obtained a warrant for the keys last year to access data protected by Microsoft's drive encryption, which uses 128 and 256-bit AES to make data unreadable without the specific key.

A Microsoft spokesperson explained that while customers can store keys locally, the company also offers cloud storage for recovery. This convenience, however, introduces a privacy trade-off. Storing keys online creates a vulnerability, allowing authorities to bypass encryption with a legal order—a stark contrast to Apple's public refusal to help the FBI unlock an iPhone in 2016.

This incident underscores the ongoing tension between user privacy and government access. It highlights how default cloud settings can expose encrypted data to legal requests. For consumers, the choice between local and cloud key storage now carries direct security implications, especially for those handling sensitive information on Windows devices.
