A judge has ordered autonomous vehicle giant Waymo to stop overnight charging operations in Santa Monica following persistent noise complaints from local residents. Neighbors described the experience as a "fleet of locusts descending on the neighborhood," noting that the distinct acceleration and deceleration sounds of the electric vehicles were particularly disruptive during late-night hours.

Mayor Caroline Torosis stated that the ability for residents to sleep peacefully is non-negotiable, affirming that the ruling delivers much-needed relief. Residents had been vocal about the disturbances for over a year, with some comparing the sound to "Tron" outside their windows during the early morning hours.

Waymo began utilizing these facilities in January 2025. After a series of complaints and an online petition, the City of Santa Monica ordered a halt to overnight operations and eventually sued the company in November 2025. While Waymo has counter-sued, the legal battle continues, with the next court hearing scheduled for October 2026.
