Microsoft DirectStorage 1.4 Boosts Game Loading Speeds

Microsoft has released DirectStorage 1.4, a major update that promises faster game loading times and smoother asset streaming. The update introduces Zstandard compression technology, which Microsoft developed to take advantage of NVMe SSDs and reduce the CPU's role in streaming assets directly to GPUs. This eliminates traditional bottlenecks that caused delays in game loading.

A key addition is the Game Asset Conditioning Library (GACL), a tool that developers use before shipping games. GACL conditions textures to be more compressible by up to 50%, using techniques like shuffling data patterns and reducing entropy at both block and component levels. The system even incorporates machine learning to identify where compression can be applied without affecting visual quality.

Importantly, all conditioning happens before runtime - DirectStorage automatically reverses any transforms during decompression, delivering clean textures to the GPU. The public preview supports BC1, BC3, BC4, and BC5 textures, with BC7 support coming later. This update represents a significant step forward in reducing load times and improving the gaming experience on modern hardware.
