Intel Scraps Controversial Pay-to-Unlock Processor Features Program

Intel has discontinued its Software Defined Silicon initiative, archiving the GitHub repository for its Intel On Demand service that allowed enterprises to pay extra to unlock processor features. The program targeted Xeon server CPUs, offering one-time hardware activations for accelerators like Quick Assist and Data Streaming Accelerator, but failed to attract major cloud providers.

Hyperscale operators reportedly rejected the model, seeing little value in paying additional fees for capabilities baked into chips they already purchased. The company quietly removed most documentation from its Intel On Demand website, leaving only skeletal references to what was once pitched as flexible feature access.

Enthusiasts had feared the paywall model might expand to consumer processors, but the project's apparent termination suggests Intel is retreating from hardware-based feature unlocking. The move leaves subscription models focused on software services rather than physical chip capabilities.

Quick Fact: Five features were planned for activation, including Data Streaming Accelerator.
