Intel Core Ultra Series 3 Faces Launch Shortages

Intel's upcoming Core Ultra Series 3 processors, codenamed Panther Lake, could face launch delays and shortages. The company's latest earnings report reveals a critical supply constraint, forcing a strategic shift in chip allocation. Intel is prioritizing its more profitable data center and AI products over consumer chips.

This bind stems from Intel's struggle to manufacture enough chips to meet demand. The company is directing its limited internal wafer supply to data center products, moving more consumer chip production externally. Compounding the issue are still-improving yields for the new 18A process, which Intel's CEO noted are below desired levels but improving monthly.

Intel's CFO expects the first quarter to be the supply trough, with improvements in the second quarter. The company is selling every chip it can make, with both data center and consumer products sold out. This shortage could impact PC prices and availability just as Intel aims to regain consumer market momentum with its new architecture.

Looking ahead, Intel continues developing its future manufacturing nodes, including 14A, to attract external customers. Resolving the current supply crisis is critical for its financial recovery and competitive position against rivals like AMD and TSMC's clients.
