New Twitter launches as X gives up name

Operation Bluebird, Inc. has launched twitter.now, a new social media platform that it says picked up the name X Corp. walked away from. The site states, “We are not X, and we are not affiliated with X Corp.” It is rebuilding Twitter on trust, in the browser at twitter.now.

Neither X Corporation, Elon Musk, nor Andrew Mayo, one of X’s attorneys, immediately responded to Ars’ request for comment. Twitter.now is still nascent, with only hundreds of users. The platform looks and feels like the old Twitter, featuring replies and retweets.

A notable new feature is an automated fact-checking tool called Vera, a Gemini-based “veracity engine for real-time analysis” that runs on every tweet. Coates has tested Vera by posting false messages, such as “George Washington was our second president.” He says the goal is to create a safer town square, with freedom of speech but not freedom of reach.

Josh Gerben, a Washington, DC-based trademark attorney, told Ars that Operation Bluebird may have a “workable legal theory” that X Corporation abandoned the Twitter trademark, but it’s not an open-and-shut case. He noted the launch escalates the case, saying, “They’ve really upped the ante now.”
