Dragon Age Creator: Veilguard Could Be the Last

The future of the Dragon Age franchise appears uncertain, with series creator Mark Darrah suggesting that Dragon Age: The Veilguard may be the series' final installment. Despite Dragon Age: Inquisition's success as BioWare's best-selling game, Darrah noted in an interview with FRVR that EA took over a decade to release Veilguard. He believes Veilguard's perceived lackluster performance makes a sequel unlikely to be pitched, let alone approved.

Darrah described EA's relationship with game development as akin to a "hedge fund with a video game hobby," implying a complex and perhaps reluctant approach to shipping titles. He expressed doubt about who within EA would even propose a new Dragon Age game, especially given the publisher's ownership of numerous dormant IPs. Internal conflicts between EA and BioWare could further complicate matters, with BioWare potentially guarding its IP while EA might only approve a new game developed internally, not by BioWare itself. Darrah suspects that any attempt to pitch a new Dragon Age game would face significant internal resistance, making its realization improbable for various reasons.
