A single missing underscore in a username led to an innocent Canadian man, Brandon Klayme, being wrongly imprisoned for 18 months. The error occurred during a 2018 child-luring investigation originating in Madison, Wisconsin.

Investigators were searching for an individual using the Kik username “fus__ro_dah” (two underscores). However, a mistake in their subpoena resulted in a records request for “fus_ro_dah” (one underscore). This led authorities to Klayme, whose username differed by only that single character. Despite no evidence found on his devices, Klayme was arrested in 2020, convicted in 2023, and sentenced to 18 months in prison, serving the full term.

Klayme's conviction was overturned on Thursday by the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal, which stated, "Mr. Klayme is factually innocent of the offences. He should never have been charged, let alone convicted." The discovery of the username discrepancy occurred during the preparation of his appeal, finally rectifying the one-character mistake that derailed his life.
