AMD EPYC 8005 Sorano CPUs Target Telecom Edge Markets

AMD has unveiled its EPYC 8005 series server processors, codenamed "Sorano," designed to bridge the gap between high-end EPYC 9005 and entry-level EPYC 4005 parts. These Zen 5-based CPUs target single-socket platforms with a focus on telecom, edge computing, and vRAN workloads where power efficiency and space constraints matter most.

Built for performance-per-watt and performance-per-dollar rather than multi-socket scalability, the EPYC 8005 lineup succeeds the EPYC 8004 "Siena" family. AMD says these processors will scale up to 84 cores in single-socket configurations with power envelopes reaching 225W. The company is also emphasizing wide thermal operating ranges and NEBS-compliant platform support for network equipment.

For 5G vRAN deployments, AMD has added LDPC decoding optimizations to improve Layer 1 acceleration and forward-error-correction processing. These enhancements promise better uplink throughput while maintaining the deterministic behavior required in radio access network environments. The EPYC 8005 "Sorano" CPUs are expected to launch with AMD planning to reveal more detailed specifications closer to availability.
