Metro 2039 development has taken on new meaning as 4A Studios crafts the sequel amid Ukraine's ongoing war. The majority-Ukrainian team faces daily disruptions, sheltering from drone attacks and relying on generators for electricity while continuing work on the post-apocalyptic shooter.

The war has fundamentally reshaped Metro 2039's narrative. While previous games focused on preventing war, the sequel now explores consequences through a uniquely Ukrainian perspective. Executive producer Jon Bloch confirmed the message shifted as "now, war is our reality," reflecting the developers' lived experiences.

Despite challenges, Ukrainian developers continue work on Metro 2039, taking shelter when needed and relying on support from families. Growing up in 90s Ukraine taught the team not to take anything for granted and that "ideas and achievements are something you have to fight for" – a philosophy now embedded in the game's DNA.
