Ukrainian studio 4A Games unveiled its next‑gen shooter, Metro 2039, with a cinematic trailer that drops the first glimpse of a bleaker Metro universe. Set 25 years after the nuclear fallout, the game returns players to Moscow’s crumbling tunnels, now ruled by a unifying yet oppressive faction called the Novoreich. The reveal teases brutal combat and atmospheric horror and showcases next‑gen ray tracing for deeper immersion.

The story follows a new voiced protagonist dubbed The Stranger, the first fully voiced lead in the franchise. After surviving the irradiated surface, he is forced back underground where he confronts grotesque mutants and a hostile regime promising “salvation.” Collaboration with exiled author Dmitry Glukhovsky ensures the narrative reflects shared values of freedom amid today’s harsh realities and moral dilemmas.

Development has continued despite power outages, generator reliance and intermittent missile strikes, a testament to the team’s resilience under war conditions. Metro 2039 targets Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC, with a slated winter release. The upgraded engine promises richer lighting and more detailed ruins, raising expectations for the series’ most visually ambitious entry yet, and refined AI combat.
