Taco Bell Linked to Cyclospora Outbreak

A probe into the recent foodborne outbreak points to Taco Bell as a potential source of Cyclospora, but investigators say the parasite could stem from multiple suppliers. Some patients reported eating at the fast‑food chain, while others did not, making pinpointing the culprit tough.

Cyclospora can take up to two weeks to trigger symptoms, complicating recall of meals, the MDHHS noted. The state’s complex food distribution networks add to the challenge, making it difficult to track the exact source.

Michigan tops the list with the highest case count, but the outbreak now spans at least 31 states, including New York (470 cases), Ohio (397), and North Carolina (240). The national total has surpassed 4,000+ cases, a peak typical of the summer season.

Health officials urge caution with leafy greens, especially bagged or boxed varieties. The safest approach is to buy whole heads, trim outer leaves, wash thoroughly, or cook produce to 70°C (158°F) to kill the parasite. Past outbreaks linked bagged mixes, cilantro, basil, raspberries, snow peas, and green onions.
