US Shuns Ebola‑Infected Citizens; Second American Sent to Germany

A US aid worker in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has tested positive for Ebola, marking the second American infected amid the country’s exploding outbreak. The case, involving the Bundibugyo strain, has been transferred to a German facility for follow‑up care rather than treated in the United States. As of July 12, the DRC reports 1,926 cases and 702 deaths in the outbreak, the third largest on record.

Under the Trump administration, the US adopted a restrictive travel policy, barring repatriation of exposed or infected citizens despite having domestic facilities capable of safely treating Ebola patients. The US also withdrew from the World Health Organization (WHO), a key coordinator of international efforts to curb the virus. WHO Director‑General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed that the American received initial clinical care from WHO before being sent to Germany.

He urged intensified local, national, and international action to control the outbreak, stressing WHO’s collaboration with the Africa CDC to accelerate containment.
