Rocket Lab CEO Pete Beck says engine explosions during Archimedes testing are normal, despite satellite imagery showing test stand damage at NASA's Stennis Space Center. The company is developing the Archimedes engine for its upcoming Neutron rocket, which will use nine of these liquid oxygen and methane-fueled engines producing 165,000 pounds of sea-level thrust each.

Sources indicate at least two Archimedes engine tests have failed in the past three months, including one that blew the roof off a test cell. While Rocket Lab characterizes one incident as an electrical fire, insiders describe it as a catastrophic engine explosion causing significant infrastructure damage. The company maintains these failures are part of intentionally pushing engines to their limits during development.

Beck says Rocket Lab is currently testing the Archimedes engine in extreme conditions, including inducing cavitation and operating outside normal parameters. The company has two test cells at Stennis, allowing continued testing despite failures. Rocket Lab's strategy focuses on identifying failures during ground testing rather than risking them during actual Neutron rocket launches, with the company aiming for a debut launch later this year.
