Rivian continues to establish itself as a software leader in the auto industry with its latest update adding an onboard AI assistant. The electric vehicle manufacturer secured a $5 billion investment from Volkswagen Group for its clean-sheet electronic architecture approach, and now offers the Rivian Assistant to enhance its in-house infotainment system.

The new AI digital helper rolled out in software version 2026.15, compatible with both Gen1 (model-year 2024 and older) and Gen2 Rivians. Owners activate it through three methods: a steering wheel button, infotainment display icon, or voice commands using "Hey Rivian" or "OK Rivian".

Available to those with a Connect+ subscription or trial, the assistant runs within Rivian's private cloud, enabling deep integration into the vehicle's subsystems. It controls settings, climate, navigation, media, messaging, and calling while also referencing manuals, answering questions, explaining alerts, and helping troubleshoot problems. The assistant represents Rivian's commitment to creating a complete ecosystem without relying on third-party systems like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
