Plex adds social lists and forums to expand discovery

Plex is steadily abandoning its simple media server identity in favor of a broader social entertainment hub. Starting today, users can build and share personalized lists containing any movie, show, or episode hosted on the platform. The company is also launching a community forum this month that lets people post comments directly on individual titles, seasons, or episodes.

Later this year, Plex will let users import lists from rival streaming services and react to curated collections shared by friends. A new "Follow Anything" tool will send alerts about followed movies, shows, actors, or crew members. The company wants to unify discovery so users spend less time jumping between competing apps to track what they want to watch.

Match Scores will also debut later this year, using viewing history and past ratings to predict how much someone will enjoy a given title before they hit play. Plex already lets viewers rate content, but this year it will expand expression with emoji reactions and image replies to reviews. The goal is to add what Plex calls "a new layer of expression to every conversation."

The company points to 100 million monthly watching decisions and over 45 million existing watchlists as evidence that users want these tools. Rather than remaining a passive media server, Plex is building a discovery layer to keep users organized amid a fractured streaming market. The move reflects a clear bet that social interaction will keep people inside its app longer.
