Plex Triples Lifetime Pass Price to $750 Amid Subscription Shift

Plex will increase its Lifetime Pass subscription from $250 to $750 effective July 1, 2025, representing a 200% price hike that forces users to reconsider their media server options. The dramatic increase means customers now face a steep premium for one-time access to features that previously cost significantly less.

The Lifetime Pass originally launched in 2012 at just $75, rising to $150 in 2014 before settling at $120 for several years. Plex quietly bumped the price to $250 in March 2025, setting the stage for today's announcement. With annual subscriptions priced at $70, users would need to subscribe for 11 years before the $750 lifetime option becomes cost-effective.

Plex acknowledged it has considered eliminating the Lifetime Pass entirely, as recurring revenue better supports long-term development. The company cited expanded software features and ongoing maintenance costs as justification for the increase. This shift reflects Plex's broader evolution from a media server platform to a streaming service provider with ad-supported TV channels and movie rentals.

The price increase arrives as Plex pivots toward profitability through its streaming business, which now serves more users than traditional media server capabilities. Legacy customers increasingly view Plex as abandoning its core mission, potentially driving users toward alternatives like Jellyfin, Emby, and Kodi.
