Plex Lifetime Pass Price Surges to $749.99 Starting July 1

Plex will increase its Lifetime Pass price from $249.99 to $749.99 on July 1 at 12:01 a.m. UTC, marking a dramatic 200% price hike for the popular media server platform. The change affects only the lifetime subscription tier, leaving monthly ($6.99) and annual ($69.99) plans unchanged.

The company previously considered eliminating the Lifetime Pass entirely, citing sustainability concerns. Plex states the new pricing reflects "real, ongoing value" of software development and maintenance. While recurring subscriptions support long-term development, lifetime purchases become less viable over time.

Existing Lifetime Pass holders face no changes and will retain their benefits. The $749.99 cost equals roughly 10.5 years of annual subscription fees, compared to the current price covering just 3.5 years. Users must decide if locking in lifetime access now saves money versus ongoing payments.

Free alternatives like Jellyfin offer similar functionality without subscription costs, though with less polished apps and smaller community support. This price jump may push budget-conscious users toward open-source options while dedicated Plex fans rush to secure lifetime access before the deadline.
