Nissan is bringing its E-Power hybrid system to North America with the 2025 Rogue, promising up to 50 mpg fuel economy. The company loaded European-spec Qashqais onto a boat for journalists to test the powertrain that will debut later this year in the Rogue. This marks Nissan's first serious attempt at a hybrid system optimized for American driving conditions.

Unlike traditional hybrids, E-Power uses a 1.5L turbocharged 3-cylinder engine that never directly powers the wheels. Instead, it generates electricity for a 2.1 kWh battery pack or sends power directly to the 202 hp electric motor. The system is more compact than previous generations, combining five components into a single modular unit. Nissan claims this engine achieves 42 percent thermal efficiency, surpassing what other engines in their lineup can deliver.

The test drive in snowy Michigan conditions revealed both strengths and weaknesses. While acceleration was smooth without a transmission and the engine remained quiet most of the time, brake feel needed improvement with noticeable jerkiness when friction brakes engaged. The powertrain delivered adequate performance but wasn't particularly quick. Nissan's decision to finally bring E-Power to the US addresses years of criticism about their lackluster hybrid offerings, potentially giving them a competitive edge against Toyota and Honda's electrified lineups.
