Framework's Linux Laptop Challenge

Framework has released updated laptops with Intel's Core Ultra Series 3 processors, positioning the Framework Laptop 13 Pro as a "MacBook Pro for Linux users." The company now has more Linux users (55%) than Windows users on their Laptop 13, a surprising statistic that drives their renewed focus on Linux support. The Pro model will be the first pre-built laptop to ship with Linux installed from the factory.

The new system features Framework's first officially Ubuntu Certified hardware, reflecting the company's commitment to Linux enthusiasts. CEO Nirav Patel revealed design changes like a haptic trackpad were made partly to attract MacBook users seeking something more repairable. This shift comes as Microsoft faces criticism for Windows' current reputation, while SteamOS and Proton make gaming on Linux more accessible.

Despite being a smaller manufacturer, Framework has navigated RAM and storage shortages effectively. Patel notes their five-year history and current volume allow them to secure allocations from suppliers directly, a critical advantage in today's supply-constrained environment. The company's focus on sustainability and user choice continues to differentiate it in an increasingly homogenized PC market.
