EU Probes X Over AI-Generated Sexual Imagery

The European Union has launched a major investigation into X over the creation and distribution of non-consensual sexual imagery by its Grok chatbot. Ireland's Data Protection Commission announced the probe, citing concerns about GDPR compliance and the processing of EU user data. This inquiry follows widespread backlash after users generated thousands of sexualized deepfakes of women and children using the AI tool.

Elon Musk's xAI, which developed Grok, merged with SpaceX last year to form a $1.5 trillion company. The investigation marks the latest regulatory scrutiny facing X, as authorities worldwide examine the platform's handling of AI-generated content. The French government recently raided X's Paris offices, and the UK's Information Commissioner has also launched an investigation into Grok's use of personal data.

X has implemented technological measures to limit explicit image generation following pressure from governments, but maintains that it removes child sexual abuse material and non-consensual nudity. The EU probe will specifically examine whether X violated GDPR rules requiring companies to process personal data only for lawful purposes and conduct risk assessments for high-risk features. This investigation adds to X's mounting regulatory challenges as it faces increasing scrutiny over content moderation and AI safety.
