The European Commission has opened an investigation into Elon Musk's X platform, focusing on its Grok AI tool's potential to generate sexualised images of real people. This follows a similar probe from UK regulator Ofcom and could result in fines up to 6% of X's global turnover if the Digital Services Act is breached.

X's Safety team previously stated Grok was restricted from altering images in jurisdictions where such content is illegal. However, campaigners argue the tool's ability to create explicit content should have been prevented entirely. The Commission may impose interim measures if X fails to implement meaningful changes to its AI systems.

This investigation extends a broader EU scrutiny of X's risks, including its recommender algorithms.
