Ebola Cases Surge to 676 in DRC as Kenya Protests US Quarantine Plans

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has escalated to 676 confirmed cases, with the US response hampered by its withdrawal from the World Health Organization and dismantling of USAID. CDC modeling shows that if only 20 percent of cases are properly isolated, the outbreak could explode to more than 20,000 cases and 4,000 deaths within just three months.

The Trump administration's isolationist approach has created international friction as it attempts to establish a quarantine facility at a military base in Kenya, a country currently untouched by Ebola. This plan involves preventing even US citizens from returning home if exposed to the virus, effectively outsourcing containment efforts.

Kenyan protests have erupted in Nanyuki, the town nearest to the air base, with demonstrators accusing officials of compromising national biosecurity for foreign aid. The Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union expressed disgust at the government's willingness to accept Americans that the US refuses to take in. Police clashes have left at least three protesters dead.

A Kenyan court has temporarily suspended the quarantine facility from opening, but the Trump administration continues pushing forward with the plans despite growing domestic opposition and international criticism of its handling of the public health crisis.
