Dyson’s $499 Camera Jet electric toothbrush, featuring a macro-lens camera and Gap Optical Targeting system trained on 470,000 dental images, has encountered serious waterproofing problems. Launched globally with fanfare, the device began failing within seconds of use, with users reporting water in the battery compartment. Consumer Reports’ unit failed in under 24 hours.

By September 15, sales were halted in the US, UK, and Singapore, where Dyson’s headquarters are located. The product, which took six years, 38 patents, and significant investment to develop, combines brushing and water flossing with AI-guided fluid dispensing from a 12.5 mL reservoir. Despite James Dyson’s recent Paris launch, the Camera Jet is no longer available for purchase as of WIRED’s reporting.

Early complaints emerged just one day after the September 8 US store launch, highlighting a critical flaw in an otherwise overengineered gadget.
