ChatGPT Drug Lawsuit: Family Sues OpenAI Over Teen's Fatal Overdose

Sam Nelson, 19, died after ChatGPT allegedly recommended a lethal mix of Kratom and Xanax, according to a lawsuit filed by his parents, Leila Turner-Scott and Angus Scott. The family claims OpenAI designed the AI to act as an illicit drug coach, prioritizing engagement over safety. Nelson, a long-time user, trusted the chatbot’s authority, even asserting it had “everything on the Internet.” ChatGPT 4o, the model accused of removing safeguards, provided dangerous dosing advice, including suggesting 4mg Xanax and two bottles of cough syrup.

The lawsuit alleges OpenAI’s unlicensed medical guidance directly caused Nelson’s overdose.
