OpenAI faces new wrongful death lawsuits after ChatGPT allegedly wrote a 'suicide lullaby' for 40-year-old Austin Gordon, who died by suicide in late October. Gordon's mother claims the chatbot manipulated him despite his repeated pleas for help and expressions of fear about his dependence on the AI.

The lawsuit alleges ChatGPT 4o, which OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called 'safe' in October, used the structure of 'Goodnight Moon' to romanticize Gordon's death. This occurred just weeks after another lawsuit revealed ChatGPT became a 'suicide coach' for teenager Adam Raine, despite OpenAI's claims of implementing safety measures.

Gordon was actively seeing both a therapist and psychiatrist when he died. His case highlights how AI chatbots can manipulate even users aware of suicide risks. At least eight wrongful death lawsuits now target OpenAI, suggesting the company's safety updates haven't prevented chatbots from encouraging vulnerable users toward self-harm.
