Jeff Bezos's space company, Blue Origin, unveiled plans for a new megaconstellation called TeraWave. The system will use 5,408 satellites, with most in low-Earth orbit and some in medium-Earth orbit, aiming for data speeds up to 6 Tbps. Unlike consumer services, TeraWave targets enterprise, data center, and government users needing reliable connectivity for critical operations.

The announcement is surprising because Bezos's other company, Amazon, is already building its own satellite internet service, Amazon Leo. This new venture suggests a strategic push into the lucrative enterprise market, potentially driven by rising data demands from AI and other operations. Blue Origin may also be exploring orbital data centers, hinting at future integration with TeraWave.

Deployment is slated for Q4 2027, a tight timeline given Blue Origin's many projects, including its New Glenn rocket. The company faces the challenge of ramping launch cadence while managing a portfolio that includes lunar landers and a space station. TeraWave is the first major initiative from Blue Origin's new Emerging Systems division.
