Amazon seeks FCC approval for 5,105 satellites

Amazon's Leo subsidiary has applied to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to launch up to 5,105 satellites for its direct-to-mobile service. This move aims to establish a satellite constellation in low Earth orbit, providing voice, messaging, data, and emergency services to mobile devices beyond traditional cell tower range.

Amazon Leo plans to begin deploying these satellites in 2028. Currently, the company has launched over 390 satellites for its first-generation broadband service, with fixed service rollouts expected later this year. Partnerships are already in place with companies like Vodafone and DirecTV.

This initiative places Amazon Leo in direct competition with SpaceX, which has also filed an application with the FCC for a massive satellite constellation. The two companies have publicly clashed over these plans, with Amazon questioning SpaceX's proposal. FCC chair Brendan Carr has advised Amazon to concentrate on its own satellite endeavors.
