Amazon is planning to deploy up to 5,105 low Earth orbit satellites, leveraging Globalstar spectrum to offer voice, data, messaging, and emergency services to devices like the iPhone. This initiative aims to enhance current iPhone satellite capabilities and enable new features.

Apple currently utilizes Globalstar for its iPhone and Apple Watch Ultra 3 satellite functionalities. Amazon is in the process of acquiring Globalstar, and a deal is in place for Globalstar to operate alongside Amazon's Leo satellite network, jointly powering future Apple satellite services. This includes services like Emergency SOS via satellite and Find My.

Amazon's proposed constellation will provide satellite-based cellular service in areas lacking cell tower coverage, promising improved speed and throughput for compatible devices. Amazon has filed an application with the FCC, with satellite deployment expected to begin in 2028. The Globalstar merger is anticipated to close in 2027 pending regulatory approval.
