Bentley reveals Torcal as first EV name

Bentley has confirmed its first electric vehicle will be called the Torcal, joining the Bentayga, Bacalar, and Batur as the brand's fourth model line. The name continues Bentley's convention of drawing from natural landmarks — in this case, El Torcal de Antequera, a striking limestone formation in Andalusia, Spain. The automaker also notes the name traces to the Latin "torquere," the root of torque, signaling the EV's high-twist powertrain.

Prototypes have been spotted testing at the Arctic Circle late last year, revealing interior details, and more recently at the Nürburgring. Earlier trademark filings in Europe and the UK for "Torcal" fueled speculation, though the absence of a U.S. filing led Car and Driver to predict a "Bentley Barnato" badge — a nod to Woolf Barnato, who secured three Le Mans victories for Bentley in 1928, 1929, and 1930.

The Torcal name choice settles the debate and reinforces Bentley's branding strategy. By linking the name to both a geological landmark and the etymological root of torque, the company signals performance credentials for its electric debut without invoking heritage racing names.
