Apple Mandates Home App Upgrade: Smart Home Users Must Switch Today

Apple is forcing smart home users to upgrade to its new Home architecture starting today, ending support for the original HomeKit system. The transition, first announced in 2022, was paused after early adopters reported slow or unresponsive devices when it launched with iOS 16.2. The company has now made the updated architecture mandatory for anyone wanting to continue using the Home app.

Users who haven't yet switched must update all their devices to iOS 16.2, iPadOS 16.2, macOS 13.1, tvOS 16.2, or watchOS 9.2 or later before accessing the upgrade prompt in the Home app. Apple notes that some users may be automatically upgraded, though it hasn't specified which circumstances trigger this. The old architecture and original Home app are being completely discontinued.

The new system enables features like guest access, robot vacuum cleaners, and Activity History in the Home app. It also requires a HomePod or Apple TV for home hub functionality needed for Matter-compatible accessories and shared home control. iPads can no longer serve as home hubs under the new architecture, marking a significant change from the original system.
