Allstate Sues Broadcom Over Software Audits

Insurance giant Allstate is suing Broadcom, alleging the chipmaker initiated multiple software audits as retaliation after Allstate terminated its VMware and CA Technologies contracts. Allstate claims it informed VMware in September 2025 that it had removed the virtualization software from its devices, rendering Broadcom's audit scripts unusable. By October, Allstate stated all VMware instances were terminated and its audit obligations fulfilled.

Broadcom, however, disputes this, claiming Allstate failed to comply with audit requirements. This legal battle follows a separate May 2025 lawsuit where CA Technologies accused Allstate of copyright infringement and breach of contract related to the sale of a business unit that used Symantec products. Allstate maintains it acted in good faith regarding its contractual obligations in both instances.

Both cases have a deadline of May 17, 2027, for dispositive motions. These lawsuits highlight Broadcom's aggressive approach to enforcing software licenses and its willingness to engage in legal disputes with former VMware customers. Allstate's move away from VMware places it among a growing number of large enterprises challenging Broadcom's business practices in court.
