Tesco Sues Broadcom Over VMware Price Hike

Tesco has filed a lawsuit against Broadcom, VMware and reseller Computacenter, claiming a 100 million pounds damages demand for an alleged price hike on VMware software. The retailer says the cost jump was 175 percent higher than expected for VMware Cloud Foundation 9.0 and 350 percent for mainframe support.

The case centers on Tesco’s migration to an unnamed virtualization platform that conflicts with its Veeam and Zerto backup tools. After rejecting four Broadcom offers, Tesco deemed the $23.5 million package—about 17.6 million pounds—unfair, citing incompatibility and escalating support costs.

Broadcom argues the price increase was justified and that Tesco should not recover damages after finding alternate solutions. The dispute will move to court between November 2027 and February 2028, potentially setting a precedent for other VMware customers feeling pressured post‑acquisition.

This clash highlights broader industry friction: virtualization firms like Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Nutanix chase dissatisfied VMware users, while Broadcom maintains a focus on large‑enterprise sales. The outcome will clarify how price adjustments are treated in enterprise software contracts.
