That’s the question behind Machine Payments Protocol (MPP). At a MPP event at Stripe HQ, I spoke with Emily Sands and Matt Schulman from Stripe, along with Brendan Ryan from Tempo. MPP removes friction between buyer and seller by creating an interface for AI agents to settle payments, irrespective of method.

MPP was co-authored by Stripe and Tempo, and launched on 18th March, 2026. The core specification is published as the Payment HTTP Authentication Schema and submitted to the IETF standards track. Before money moves, parties must agree on cost, payment definition, and proof—MPP automates this for agents, removing the human from the payment flow.
