Kimi Antonelli became Formula 1's youngest ever pole-sitter at the Chinese Grand Prix, edging out Mercedes teammate George Russell. The 19-year-old Italian broke Sebastian Vettel's record set in 2008 when he was 21, setting a time of 1:32.064 to beat Russell by just 0.222s.

Russell appeared to have the advantage but suffered a technical issue in the final qualifying segment, limiting him to one rushed lap. Antonelli capitalized with two clean runs, securing Mercedes' third front-row lockout in three sessions. "It was a pretty clean session, so I'm really happy," Antonelli said after also claiming a Sprint pole at last year's Miami Grand Prix.

Hamilton edged out Leclerc for third, with the pair separated by just 0.001s. Verstappen continued his difficult start to 2026 with Red Bull, qualifying eighth as the team struggled for pace. Mercedes demonstrated their championship-winning form once again while Red Bull's early season problems deepened, with the reigning constructors' champions now facing an uphill battle to defend their titles.
