Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli made history at the Chinese Grand Prix by becoming the youngest driver to secure pole position in Formula 1. The 18-year-old Italian beat teammate George Russell, with a time that put him 0.3 seconds ahead of Leclerc. Antonelli acknowledged his advantage came after Russell encountered multiple issues during the chaotic qualifying session.

Russell described his second-place finish as "damage limitation" after a troubled afternoon. Championship leader suffered a broken front wing in Q2, then got stranded on track before being repaired just in time for his final lap. Russell admitted the car wasn't in optimum condition as he set his time, leaving him grateful to secure P2.

Lewis Hamilton finished third, just 0.351 seconds off pole, and expressed confidence in his team's progress. Hamilton stated engineers had done "great work over the break" and closed the gap to the front runners. The seven-time champion aims to challenge Mercedes during Sunday's grand prix after learning valuable lessons during Saturday's sprint race.
