Real Madrid's Caroline Weir has been named permanent captain of Scotland Women's national team, with Chelsea's Erin Cuthbert appointed vice-captain. Weir, who has earned 115 caps for her country, takes over from Rachel Corsie, who retired last summer and joined Sky Sports as an analyst. Head coach Melissa Andreatta made the announcement ahead of Scotland's World Cup qualifying campaign.

Weir expressed her gratitude for the trust placed in her, calling the captaincy 'a proud moment for me and my family.' The 28-year-old joined Real Madrid in 2022 and has been a key figure in Scotland's midfield for over a decade. Cuthbert, with 82 caps, described her vice-captain role as 'an incredible privilege and honour,' noting she never imagined representing Scotland so many times, let alone taking on a leadership position.

Scotland's first matches under the new leadership duo will be a World Cup qualifying double-header against Luxembourg on March 3 and March 7. Andreatta has named a 23-player squad featuring several notable inclusions and exclusions, with Kathleen McGovern returning from injury and Charlotte Newsham earning her first call-up as an uncapped defender. The team aims to build momentum toward the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.
