WBC Endorses Opetaia vs Mikaelian Unification Bout

The WBC has given its backing to a potential cruiserweight unification fight between IBF champion Jai Opetaia and WBC titleholder Noel Mikaelian. WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman expressed support for the matchup, calling both fighters 'good champions' and stating the organization would not obstruct their unification plans. This development comes as Opetaia, who remains unbeaten, continues to build his reputation with impressive knockout victories over Mairis Briedis and others.

Opetaia's promoter Zuffa Boxing, a new boxing promotion company that recently signed the Australian fighter, could set up an alternative to traditional sanctioning bodies. The company plans to administer its own belts and rankings following changes in American legislation. However, Sulaiman welcomed Zuffa's participation in the existing boxing landscape, stating the WBC's policy focuses on making the best fights possible for the industry, promoters, fighters, and fans.

Meanwhile, the WBC is also managing heavyweight division plans, with Agit Kabayel potentially becoming the mandatory challenger for Oleksandr Usyk if he retains his interim title. Usyk will first make a voluntary defense of his WBC belt before facing any mandatory obligations. The organization has approved a long process to reach undisputed status in the heavyweight division, including a Tyson Fury rematch and the creation of the interim championship for Kabayel.

Quick Fact: Jai Opetaia has recorded a sequence of stunning knockout wins in his undefeated career.
