England managing director Rob Key has left the door open for Ben Stokes to return from international retirement for the 2027 Ashes against Australia. Stokes, 35, stepped down as Test captain and retired in June following a 2-1 series defeat to New Zealand and a 4-1 Ashes loss. His departure came after he was made unavailable for the second Test against New Zealand for breaching a midnight curfew.

Asked if Stokes could return, Key told *Sky Sports News*: "It would be a brilliant story if he does." He added Stokes hasn't intimated a return but "wouldn't be surprised. Anything's possible with Ben." Key also denied any burnt bridges: "No, not at all. Not as far as I'm concerned." On Thursday, England reinstated Joe Root as captain and appointed Stephen Fleming as Brendon McCullum's successor.

Key defended his own position amid scrutiny after seven losses in nine Tests, saying he remains "optimistic" and passionate. He also dismissed concerns over Fleming's lack of red-ball coaching experience, citing his 18 years with Chennai Super Kings in the IPL: "I think he's [been] one of the most experienced coaches of international cricketers." Key advocated a "refined approach" rather than radical change.

England's three-Test series against Pakistan begins August 19 at Headingley, followed by Lord's (August 27) and Edgbaston (September 9), all live on Sky Sports.
