RFL Appoints Ian Nolan as CEO from October 1

Ian Nolan will become the Rugby Football League's chief executive on October 1, ending a period of interim leadership after Tony Sutton stepped down in September. Nolan, 44, spent seven years as a senior executive at Manchester United overseeing the club's global media network before serving as chief marketing officer at Science in Sport.

RFL chair Nigel Wood said Nolan emerged from a strong candidate pool to lead the sport through a critical commercial reset. Wood cited Nolan's experience in digital media and sports rights commercialisation as essential for reversing recent revenue declines. The appointment follows a successful Magic Weekend that drew more than 80,000 fans, which Wood highlighted as evidence of the game's underlying appeal.

Super League's 2026 calendar is set, with Rivals Round in late July, play-offs through September, and the Grand Final on October 3. Sky Sports will broadcast every match live, splitting coverage between its main channels and the new Sky Sports+ streaming service.

Nolan's hire signals a deliberate shift toward media-rights monetisation and global audience growth. His United background suggests the RFL wants someone who can package the sport for international platforms, not just domestic broadcasters. Whether that translates to sustainable club revenues depends on execution — and on whether the 2026 broadcast deal can outpace inflation.
