McManus urges NRL-Super League unity

St Helens chairman Eamonn McManus argues that the NRL and Super League must collaborate rather than compete to expand rugby league globally. He highlights Australia’s domestic success but notes geographic and economic constraints limit further growth there.

McManus describes European rugby league as having "unlimited potential," contrasting it with Australia's saturated market. He rejects the notion that Europe is a weak sport to be exploited, stating, "This is not a matter of picking at a carcass." Instead, he advocates for a combined approach to strengthen the sport worldwide.

Rhodri Jones, managing director of the Rugby Football League (RFL), echoed these sentiments. In a statement, he expressed genuine interest in exploring a mutually beneficial partnership with the NRL. Jones believes such a collaboration would create a single global entity, unlocking significant added value for the sport.

The RFL aims for a financially fair arrangement that leverages Europe's growth opportunities. BBC Sport has contacted the NRL for comment on these proposals.
