Cameron Norrie booked a fourth-round spot at the Madrid Open with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Thiago Agustin Tirante, setting up a mouth-watering clash with world No 1 Jannik Sinner. The British No 1 had never faced Sinner despite meeting Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic on multiple occasions throughout his career.

That changes on Tuesday when Norrie, 30, will attempt to halt Sinner's 19-match winning streak and reach the quarter-finals in Madrid for the first time. "He's probably the most confident player in tennis right now," Norrie told Sky Sports. "Every time we practice he rips me up, but I just need to play my game."

Tirante, ranked 75th, sent down a serve measured at 149 miles per hour but created no break points against Norrie's serve. The British player converted his third break opportunity in the 12th game of the opening set with a backhand winner before clinching victory in the second-set tie-break.

Meanwhile, Coco Gauff fought off illness to beat Sorana Cirstea 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, vomiting into a bin midway through the second set but still advancing to the last 16.
