Britain's Cameron Norrie was knocked out of the National Bank Open at the last-16 stage after a 6-2 7-6 (10-8) defeat by Arthur Fils in Montreal. Fils, the French 18th seed, dominated early with a powerful serve to win the first set, and Norrie matched Fils' power in the second to force a tie-break. Despite creating two set-point opportunities, Norrie couldn't convert, and Fils sealed the one-hour-and-43-minute match.

Norrie had previously beaten third seed Alex de Minaur in the prior round, turning the tables from match-point. Fils will face Spain's Rafael Jodar in the quarter-finals, after upsetting eighth-seed Jiri Lehecka. Meanwhile, World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka suffered a setback in her US Open build-up as Ekaterina Alexandrova beat her 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-4 in Toronto.

The 16th-seeded Alexandrova fought a hard battle to secure his quarter-final berth, while Sabalenka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, was unable to halt Alexandrova's aggressive shot-making in the decider.
