McIlroy Criticizes PGA Tour Two-Tier System as LIV Threat Fades

Rory McIlroy has openly questioned the PGA Tour's proposed two-tier schedule changes, suggesting the pre-LIV structure worked well enough. Speaking ahead of the US Open, the Northern Irishman revealed concerns about the upcoming revamp that will split tournaments into separate tracks with promotion and relegation between tiers.

The PGA Tour plans to launch this new format in 2028, featuring Track One events with elevated prize purses and stronger fields, while Track Two events risk becoming secondary competitions. McIlroy specifically highlighted that LIV Golf's emergence forced unnecessary changes that may now prove counterproductive.

He warned that iconic tournaments like the Canadian Open could lose their prestige if relegated to Track Two status, essentially becoming glorified Korn Ferry Tour events. The four-time major winner noted that events require $30m sponsorship to maintain their standing, creating a financial barrier that threatens traditional tour stops.

With Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund ending LIV funding after this season, McIlroy's comments reflect growing sentiment that the PGA Tour's reactive measures may have disrupted a system that functioned adequately before external pressure emerged.
