Mark Butcher Slams 2027 Ashes Northern Snub

Former England batsman Mark Butcher has called the decision to exclude Headingley and Old Trafford from the 2027 Ashes schedule "extraordinary" and "bizarre." The five-Test series against Australia will open at Trent Bridge before moving to Lord's, Edgbaston, the Utilita Bowl in Southampton, and The Kia Oval in London — leaving no venue north of Nottingham for the men's matches.

Butcher argued that a series marketed as "a game for everybody" requires representation in the north, noting both grounds possess deep Ashes history. "Sadly, the Utilita Bowl is not one of them," he told Sky Sports. England batter Harry Brook echoed the disappointment, citing Headingley's memorable Ashes moments, including Ben Stokes' 2019 heroics and the 2023 series-saving win.

While the women's Ashes will feature a Test at Headingley next summer, the men's game won't return there until 2029. Both northern venues are slated for the 2031 series, but critics question the four-year gap. The ECB's rotation policy has sparked debate over geographic accessibility versus commercial considerations.
